MediaTek Dimensity 1080 delivers more performance for affordable Android smartphones

If the current generation of mid-range Android smartphones seems ancient, MediaTek has something to liven up the mix. The Dimensity 1080 will now be compatible with the new generation of mid-range Android smartphones, replacing the aging Dimensity 920 chipset. MediaTek promises more performance and better efficiency than the older model it replaces, and it should spawn new smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2022. MediaTek has not yet named the manufacturers using this new chipset.

Additionally, the Dimensity 1080 also supports a 200MP main camera, powered by MediaTek’s Imagiq Image Signal Processor (ISP). The chipset has a hardware-accelerated HDR video capture engine to handle up to 4K resolution.

The Dimensity 1080 brings slight performance gains over the 920, but is still a cut below the Dimensity 8100 that powers the flagship phones. The Dimensity 1080 features an upgraded octa-core processor with two ARM Cortex-A78 CPU cores up to 2.6 GHz, combined with an ARM Mali-G68 GPU. The chipset is based on the 6nm design which MediaTek promises to bring great benefits to battery life.

“Gamers can benefit from the Dimensity 1080’s HyperEngine 3.0 gaming enhancements for fast performance and seamless connectivity, as well as the chipset-integrated AI 3.0 Processing Unit (APU 3.0) for optimal power efficiency. Additionally, the Dimensity 1080 supports 5G networks below 6 GHz and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, so gamers around the world can enjoy smooth, uninterrupted gaming,” said MediaTek.

Previously, MediaTek unveiled the Helio G99 chip as a performance-oriented 4G chipset for budget smartphones and tablets. MediaTek also launched its Dimensity 9000 series chips for the flagship Android smartphone market in early 2022.

Overall, the Dimensity 1080 is a slight update to the Dimensity 920 chip that powers a large number of Android smartphones in the market. This means that the chip’s overall performance could be more in line with Snapdragon 778G powered smartphones. We expect smartphones in the Rs. 25,000 price range to use this chip.
